"when I grow up..." goal setting.

setting goals that will help you become the person you've always wanted to be.

"who will I be? it's up to me, all the never ending possibilities that I can see, there's nothing that I can't do"- Demi Lovato, "Who Will I Be"

If there's one thing that keeps me in check and keeps my life balanced, it's setting goals. From the beginning of my life I've been setting goals that have kept my life in motion. Whether it was creating new year's resolutions or aiming for a student of the month award, I always try to create a path for future me to live by. Setting goals in high school and community college have put me through hard times but nevertheless have put me in a place today that I will always be grateful for. Now that I am in my last two years of undergraduate education, the goals that I have set during this time have created a path for future years to follow by. Here are a few of my goals:

graduate from college

While this goal will come off as a no-brainer to almost everyone reading this post, graduating from college will be a huge accomplishment in my eyes. Since the beginning of my academic career, I always knew that I would go to college and eventually graduate with a bachelor's degree. This accomplishment is something that a lot of people in my family were not able to have in their lives. Neither of my parents went to college and it is something that they have expressed regret for. Visualizing a diploma in my hand and hearing my name at the graduation ceremony brings me so much joy and excitement because that's when I'll know that I have done it. This goal is more than realistic and more than obtainable for me because my family has given me all the support I would need to accomplish it. This goal is more than relevant to me because I have always valued education and have never taken it for granted. Graduating from college will show me how much education has improved my life and I can't wait to see the day in June 2022.

write a book

This goal ties in with my love for writing. As a Political Science major who grew up with a love for reading (thanks to Princess Belle) I've always had a knack for writing and storytelling. I would love to write and publish a book some time in the future that gives life advice through spirituality or opens conversations about the educational world. I love being a helpful person in any shape or form so publishing a book that gives advice to people who may share similar experiences with me would be amazing. This goal is completely realistic as I write down any piece of advice that I've been given all the time. Turning the advice I've been given and my own advice into a book will make me feel that I have helped more people than I can count. There is no specific age or deadline in which I would have to write and publish this book, it is simply something that I hope to do at least once in my life.

live in new york city

My most valued goal in life that I've been dreaming of since I was about 9 years old is to live in New York City. It could be in Manhattan, Queens (where my dad is from), or Brooklyn (where my mom is from), as long as it's in New York I will be more than happy. New York is a very special place to me as my mom's side of the family lives there and I feel that it's my second home after L.A. I've always been in love with the busy city life and I feel that I belong there more than any other place in the world. I know that I will have achieved this goal when I get a job and a place to stay in the city. To see the buildings around me and to hear all the noises that New York has (good and bad ones) will let me know that I have made it. It's more than realistic to me because through the years my tenacity to get the things that I want has shown through time and time again. I want to achieve this goal because I know that I belong in New York and I know that I will flourish there. This move can happen at any point in my life, the timing will fall into place as it should be.

First of all, I LOVE wetheurban, such a dope instagram account and the Demi quote was just perfect. I really love that you talked about setting goals to become a certain version of yourself that you really want to be. I also love your idea for a book! I personally love advice/self improvement books and I would love to see this type of book that has a spirituality or educational aspect to it as well. Over all I thought this post was really engaging and I loved the pictures you added as well!

Hey Isabella! I love this wholesome post. I love how simple and grounded your goals are. Your first goal of graduating from college is touching given that both of your parents did not attend. Seeing that we UCLA students are a "lost generation" and that we would have had six quarters of online learning (at least a year away from in-person learning, provided that fall is actually online), the thought of graduation is more poignant. I love how you mentioned that you want to write a book! That's awesome, I wrote a book in high school about mental health and anti-bullying, two themes that I am super passionate about. It's called "Memories Cached".
